KENTUCKY DERBY | Get ready to don your finest hats and sip on mint juleps because the Kentucky Derby is just around the corner! 🏇 This weekend we`ll be celebrating this iconic event, which holds the esteemed title of the longest continuously held major sporting event in the United States dating all the way back to 1875.
Did you know that the Kentucky Derby has deep historical ties to our very own town of Fincastle in Botetourt County? Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., founder of the Louisville Jockey Club and builder of Churchill Downs, where the Derby is run, was the grandson of none other than General William Clark of the legendary Lewis and Clark Expedition. Fincastle boasts a unique connection to this historic voyage as well. In 1807, William Clark returned to Fincastle to a warm welcome, and the following year, he married Julia Hancock at the beautiful Santillane home, one of only three residences associated with either Clark or Lewis, according to the National Park Service.
In honor of our town`s rich history and its ties to these legendary explorers, Fincastle was officially recognized as a Meriwether Lewis and William Clark Community in 2012. So as we raise our glasses to toast the Derby this weekend, let`s also tip our hats (be sure to shop LOCAL to find fantastic Derby-worthy attire) to the indelible mark left by these trailblazers on our community`s history.
Grab your tickets for the Kentucky Derby Party happening this Saturday @202socialhouse from 5:30-8 PM.
