Meet the new traditional farmhouse.

The days of word-art and faux patina in kitchens and homes are long gone, according to Stacy Becker, principal and lead designer of White Label Interiors in Seattle, Washington. “We’re not looking to fake a farm life anymore,” she explains. “Instead, it’s about a comfortable familiarity.” New traditional farmhouse design style eskews kitchy word-art and faux patina and prioritizes authenticity through the incorporation of antiques, family heirlooms, and European details.

Warm up with butcher block.

The butcher block island is a big kitchen trend for 2024, as evidenced by stylish kitchens everywhere. “There’s something about a butcher block island that feels very homey,” Hattie Collins, owner of Hattie Sparks Interiors in New Orleans, Louisiana, confirms. “Beyond being functional, they warm up a space and patina so nicely over time.” And while there are a variety of stains you can choose to get the exact color you want, Collins advises ensuring your selection is treated with food-safe oils.

Cabinetry with color.

“There was once a time when everyone dreamed of a plain, clean, white kitchen space,”  Christina Garcia Lysaught, founder of Layered Dimensions Interior Design in Dallas, Texas, explains. “But color is making a comeback, especially in the kitchen.” Whether you  go bold with blue or give in to a muted greige, the departure from the starkness of a colorless kitchen is rising in popularity.

Turn toward technology.

The rise of technology in design is adding a layer of convenience and comfort that homeowners increasingly turn toward, shares Alexander Adducci, house senior designer at 210 Design House in Chicago, Illinois. Thanks to the wireless nature of most tech, integrating small luxuries like kitchen countertops that can charge your phone, or preheating your oven and turning on your vent hood directly from your phone, marry convenience and function without sacrificing style.

Make a statement with your range hood.

Whether gourmet and functional or plastered and pretty, a range hood is very specific to your style and a key kitchen trend for 2024, Becker explains. She urges clients to consider their range hoods carefully, letting them become a main design element, rather than just a functional afterthought.

Add tile worth touting.

One of the simplest ways to inject style and personality into your kitchen is through the use of tile. With a myriad of options available—from handmade zellige tiles that add texture to bold, colorful and patterned varieties—Collins notes that tile can add a healthy dose of charm to a space traditionally reserved for utility. For more impact, consider encasing your backsplash from counter to ceiling instead of stopping halfway up.

Go rogue with red.

There’s a viral opinion right now that if you add one item of red to a room you can instantly elevate your overall design aesthetic. Becker notes this is one of the many reasons why the classic Wolf range (known for its signature red knobs) tends to look so chic in a kitchen. However, if a new luxury appliance isn’t in your budget she recommends accomplishing that pop of red by adding a strategically placed piece of crimson cookware or a vintage rug with ruby-colored hues.

Introduce induction.

Eco-friendly induction cooking has become a big 2024 kitchen trend and can now be incorporated directly into stone surfaces. “Not only does this cooking method conserve natural resources and energy, but it can be built directly into a countertop, providing a smooth, natural-stone surface that you simply turn on, heat, and cook on directly,” Rama Dandamudi, president of 210 Design House, reports. Not only does this create an overall elevated user experience, but it perfectly melds one of the biggest movements in home design–tech-forward sustainability.

Go green.

Thanks to a range of attractive shades, green has become a versatile alternative to the traditional white kitchen. “Going for green is a great way to play within the tonal spectrum,” Collins shares. Whether you prefer an earthy color like a muted sage or a more glamorous emerald hue, there’s a green to match every taste profile.
