International Travel During the Time of COVID-19: Cabo Edition

Contributing Writer: Jessica Younginer, Luxury Journeys by Jess

Covid put the brakes on most travel plans this year. Hitting right around Spring Break, the pandemic threw the travel world into total chaos. However, after months upon months of staying at home, working from home, and in some cases keeping up with their kids at home, my clients were desperate for a much-needed escape from reality. They wanted to relax, recharge and feel like life was somewhat normal – even if just for a few days!

The most critical issue when talking to clients is always establishing their level of comfort and any safety concerns. As we know, even in a normal year, the world is a big place and it is necessary to stay abreast of social and political issues that may impact international travel. During this pandemic, safety concerns from a health perspective have been dramatically heightened and many people are scared to get on an airplane right now. I always talk with my clients to see what travel plans they are comfortable with and what their travel “style” may be. This year, some wanted a vacation within driving distance while others were excited to hop on a plane and lay on a tropical beach. Before we book the trip, I always review the current CDC guidelines and inform the clients whether the destination they are interested in requires a negative Covid test, any type of quarantine, and any insurance and forms that need to be filled out before arrival.

This year, I decided that the best way to reassure clients of travel safety during Covid was to travel internationally myself. My first international experiment was in Cabo and I had a wonderful experience there. I will only recommend properties to others that I know are following top COVID protocols. Since Mexico is not requiring a Covid test to enter, a resort in Cabo San Lucas was a top tropical destination this year for many of my clients due to the ease of entry as well as its proximity to the United States.

COVID PROTOCOL: After landing in Mexico, you will need to fill out the form stating you do not have a temperature, body aches, cough and have not been exposed to Covid in the last 14 days. You will also have your temperature checked after landing at the airport, before getting in your transfer, and when you check in your hotel. Many sanitizing stations are set up in the airport and hotels plus bags are sanitized before being transported to your hotel and also before being sent to your room. Most hotels in Mexico are only allowing 30-50% occupancy. Rooms are thoroughly cleaned and sealed for at least 24 hours between stays. Chairs at the pool are spaced 6’ apart, mask must be worn in public areas (except pool and beach) and dining times are spaced out to minimize the number of people at one time.

THINGS TO DO: Cabo is really on top of its game when it comes to activities for visitors. I am personally very picky about where I travel and Cabo is one of my favorite destinations for this reason. January to April is a wonderful time to visit Cabo to watch the migration of whales, escape the cold, golf, fish and relax. The beaches are stunning and all of my resort recommendations have fabulous pools, restaurants, spas, and bars for your enjoyment.

WHERE TO STAY: There are certain properties I trust in Cabo and always highly recommend to clients All of these are Virtuoso properties (where I am able to get you added amenities at no extra cost!). An example of these amenities: Daily breakfast for 2 (which can save you $60+ a day), spa credit, free wifi, and possible room upgrades upon arrival. Most resorts in Cabo are offering discounts or a 4th night free for travel from January to April – which is unheard of in high season! Some of my favorite Virtuoso resorts in Cabo:

 One and Only Palmilla

Montage Los Cabos

Las Ventanas

Grand Velas

If you are interested in international travel right now, please feel free to get in touch. It is a great time to travel internationally to safe locations and regain your peace of mind. After almost a year of experiencing life during COVID, everyone deserves the chance to rest, refuel, and recharge for 2021 and hopefully the end of this pandemic.
