Visionary Style: Mertins Eye and Optical's Guide to Eyewear Trends and Eye Health

Delve into the world of eye care with Mertins Eye and Optical, where state-of-the-art technology meets fashion-forward eyewear. In this editorial, we explore the rising concern of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), the latest trends in eyewear, and how personalization in eye care makes a difference. Located in Fayetteville and (soon) Bentonville, Mertins Eye and Optical is at the forefront of preserving sight and elevating style.

Dr. Mertins, as an expert in eye health, what emerging trends in eye care should patients be aware of in the coming year?

We saw a sharp uptick in computer vision syndrome (CVS)during COVID when everyone was working or getting education from home, and CVS rates don’t appear to be dropping. Working on a screen can cause a variety of problems, ranging from eye fatigue to dry eye to headaches. If you have these symptoms, talk to your eye care professional; he or she can help.

In the world of eyewear fashion, what styles do you see gaining popularity among your patients, and how does this reflect broader trends?

Oversized, chunky frames captured the spotlight in 2023 and we will continue to see that in 2024, but with a bit more refinement. The larger trend is the investment in handcrafted heirloom pieces made by small ateliers. Some frames take months to create. For example, Ahlem, which is located in France, uses a team of skilled artists to cut, polish, laser-engrave, and hand-paint each frame. The result is a work of art you can feel in each frame. All of the small, independent brands I carry have similar processes and attention to detail. The trend is definitely quality over quantity, which also reduces waste and helps the environment.

How does Mertins Eye and Optical integrate the latest eye care technology with a personalized approach to patient wellness?

Sight is the most important sense and the one that has the biggest impact on our lives and quality of life. In my clinic, we offer our patients iWellness, a state-of-the-art screening screening that combines a CT scan and wide-field photography of the retina. This technology helps with early detection and treatment of eye disease, which is the key to preserving sight. It also helps us identify systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which frequently go undiagnosed. When I find symptoms of these conditions in a patient’s retinal vasculature, I work with their primary care physicians to get them evaluated and treated, not only preserving their eyesight, but their overall health and wellness.

Eyewear can be deeply personal. Can you share tips on selecting frames that suit both a patient’s vision needs and aesthetic preferences?

Yes, eyewear is very personal, and it’s actually personal in three distinct but interconnected ways. First, a frame must be able to accommodate a person’s prescription. Not all will. Secondly, frames should meet each person’s own style and aesthetic, while also being either current or timeless. Finally, frames need to be the perfect fit for each person’s unique face, not just look good on someone else.

Subtle differences in facial features, face shapes, and coloring have a profound impact on how a frame fits and looks on you. My team is highly skilled at helping patients and eyewear clients find frames that meet all of these needs, and we’ve built a loyal following on this. You simply cannot get this online. So my tip is to go to an eye clinic or optical boutique with a reputation for providing premium eyewear and concierge-level service. Or come see us if you’re in Northwest Arkansas.

With an eye on style, which designer eyewear brands are currently in demand at Mertins Eye and Optical, and why do you think they resonate with customers?

It is hard to pick a favorite brand! I have noticed our patients and eyewear clients gravitating toward Ahlem and Mykita. Both brands are handmade by a team of artisans using premium materials – the meticulous attention to detail in design and execution is unmistakable. Of course, Krewe has been a top seller for years. Krewe embodies the spirit of New Orleans and offers beautiful frames at a great price point.

As someone passionate about vision health, what advice would you give to individuals looking to protect their eyes in the digital age?

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) affects approximately 80% of all computer users to some extent. I recommended the 20/20/20 rule to all patients who spend time on a screen. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. If you don’t have 20 feet, simply close your eyes.  Next, a comprehensive eye exam can help with CVS by identifying problems with efficiency in focusing, binocularity, and dry eye. Individualized treatment programs help patients feel much better at the end of a long day staring at a screen. More importantly, comprehensive eye exams are the number one thing people can do to protect their eye health and their eyesight for life.

Mertins Eye and Optical is known for its curated selection of eyewear. How do you ensure diversity in your offerings to cater to all tastes and lifestyles?

Ninety percent of our lines are small independent companies that manufacture their frames by hand. Each line we carry has a distinct design vocabulary and aesthetic. For example, Mykita offers lightweight stainless-steel frames without screws. Ahlem and Lapima are known for being over-sized, and chunky with fun colorways. SALT and Barton Perreira offer timeless styles executed perfectly. Moscot has a mix of classic pieces and fashion-forward designs. I love it when patients tell me that they have been stopped in airports, coffee shops, and boutiques by others who recognize their eyewear and share a passion for that brand. Our patients and eyewear clients get compliments daily – and their referrals have been a huge part of our success.

Lastly, could you hint at how the new Ledger expansion reflects Mertins Eye and Optical’s growth and dedication to serving the community’s eye care needs?

As this region has grown, there’s been a huge demand for premium eyewear brands and concierge-level service. Our Fayetteville location is lovely, but it’s small. The addition of a second location in the Ledger Building in Bentonville allows us to better serve the community by making it easier to get to us (especially by bike) and to offer these exclusive eyewear brands to everyone in Northwest Arkansas.
