IJAMS RIVER LOOP TRAIL

Ijams Nature Center | 1.3 Mile Loop | Easy | This iconic trail meanders through the forest, following the Tennessee River via a series of elevated boardwalks boasting scenic views and interesting windows into the rock formations along the way. It’s dog-friendly (on-leash) and a popular spot for year-round birding, hiking, and running.

 

HOUSE MOUNTAIN

House Mountain State Natural Area | 4.5 Mile Loop | Moderate to Hard | While House Mountain offers a variety of trails, the astounding views from the highest point in Knox County make rock scrambling and navigating the steep, unmaintained sections of the full loop well worth the workout. We highly recommend starting with the Mountain Trail and timing your trip just right so you catch the sunrise over the Smokies.

 

UPLAND TRAIL LOOP

Seven Islands State Birding Park | 2.2 Mile Loop | Easy | As you travel along the gentle inclines, flat stretches, and navigate the occasional rocky portions of this trail, you’ll meander through picturesque woodlands, open fields, and along the peaceful shoreline of the French Broad River. From pastoral wildflower meadows and soothing river sounds to the abundant flora and fauna, this trail is an idyllic way to explore Knoxville’s natural splendor.


GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK GUIDE

ANDREWS BALD FROM CLINGMAN’S DOME

3.5 Mile Loop | Moderate to Difficult | After a large descent from Clingman’s Dome through the towering Fraser firs, this trail levels on a broad bridge, quickly going into a final ascension that opens up to Andrews Bald. Here you’ll have several acres of open grassy meadow from which to choose a picnic spot, or to simply take in the spectacular panoramic vistas and stunning views of Fontana Lake. Depending on the time of year, you might even discover patches of wild blackberries and raspberries in addition to blooming bluets.

 

MIDDLE PRONG FROM TREMONT INSTITUTE

8.3 Mile Loop | Moderate to Difficult | This lovely woodland path follows the Middle Prong of the Little River taking you through the former heart of the original bustling town of Tremont. Every step of the way you’ll be rewarded with beautiful sights from the waterfall known as Camp Prong Cascade and multiple scenic drops providing you a perfect picture of the Smokies. This hike is becoming increasingly popular so be prepared for crowds during peak season weekends!

 

MT. LECONTE

11 Miles Out & Back | Difficult | From the evergreen forest and massive stone archways to the enormous cave and vista views, the variety of interesting sights make any huff-and-puff breaks well worth it. Whether you decide to turn around at Alum Cave or take the long journey to the top of Mt. LeConte, hikers can choose their own adventure while still experiencing the highlights of this iconic terrain. Just be sure to go on a clear day if possible so nothing interferes with the magnificent Smoky Mountain panoramas!

 

SCHOOLHOUSE GAP

3.8 Miles Out & Back | Easy | Beautiful any time of the year, this quiet forest hike is a particular favorite during spring and early summer for the variety of colorful wildflowers that you’ll encounter along the way. This trail also features a variety of confusing diversions, so just be sure to know exactly where you’re going before you venture down any new route. But if you do, we highly recommend following the unmarked path toward Blowhole Cave where you can cool off mid-journey among the icy, refreshing air it emits.

BAKER CREEK PRESERVE

7 Miles of Combined Trails | The gateway to Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, Baker Creek Preserve offers biking in both wet and dry weather with 3 bike-specific trails in addition to 5 multi-use trails. With a variety of biking options from paved tracks and jump lines for challenging your skills to nature-based routes for mountain bikers, this is a popular place for all ages and skill levels.

 

CONCORD PARK

12 Mile Loop | Situated on the shores of Fort Loudoun Lake in West Knox County, the main trails of Concord Park offer many challenging natural features. While there are no significant climbs, the rolling terrain consists of mainly tight, twisting singletrack trails testing your skills and offering an adrenaline rush as you navigate the rugged terrain.

 

IJAMS NATURE CENTER

10 Miles of Combined Trails | Notable for its undisturbed woodlands, sparkling quarry lake, scenic gorges, and hidden caves, the tranquil trails that wind throughout Ijams Nature Center have been specifically routed to enhance the most scenic and distinctive features of the terrain. With a variety of paved and natural paths for biking, any route you choose to take through this urban wildlife haven will provide an enchanting natural experience.

 

THIRD CREEK GREENWAY

7.6 Miles Out & Back | Despite its location in a fairly busy part of town, this scenic ride along Third Creek is unexpectedly peaceful, bringing you into nature while providing access to a variety of scenic attractions. While this trail bisects multiple other greenways, we recommend starting at the Bearden entrance and ending your trip with a picnic at picturesque UT Gardens.

 

WILLIAM HASTIE NATURAL AREA

William 6.3 Miles of Combined Trails | Although small, the network of trails within William Hastie Park offers a variety of exhilarating experiences for riders of all skill levels. Expect a wide range of climbs, descents, and technical challenges suited for anyone from families looking for a leisurely ride with smooth terrain and manageable slopes to advanced riders seeking an adrenaline-pumping excursion.

CHEROKEE BLVD IN SEQUOYAH HILLS

Sequoyah Park | 2.7 Miles One-Way | Winding its way through the heart of Sequoyah Hills – a charming residential neighborhood known for its tree-lined streets and historic homes – this running path is the ideal combination of natural beauty and urban charm. Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness | 7.6 Miles Out & Back | A path with relatively flat terrain, both seasoned athletes and beginners will appreciate the ability to easily maintain a steady pace while having the option for more challenging interval training. You’ll also enjoy an encounter with an abundance of wildlife from songbirds perched on branches overhead to the occasional deer grazing nearby.

 

WILLIAM HASTIE PARK

Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness | 6.3 Miles of Combined Trails | The well-designed network of trails that meander through William Hastie Park’s expansive grounds presents a mix of flat stretches and gentle inclines constantly rewarding you with glimpses of the surrounding hills and valleys plus a plethora of scenic overlooks perfect for all those huff and puff breaks.

 

WILL SKELTON GREENWAY

Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness | 6.8 Miles Out & Back | Meandering along the banks of the Tennessee River, Will Skelton Greenway provides a serene nature escape equipped with relatively flat terrain to accommodate each runner’s individual goals and abilities. If you’re up for a longer run, you can even connect to other trails, such as the Third Creek Greenway or the Neyland Greenway, expanding your options for exploration.

French Broad River | Widely considered one of the best lakes for bass fishing in the country, Douglas Lake is renowned for its abundance of game fish, particularly largemouth and smallmouth bass. FORT LOUDON LAKE
