These gals—Jennifer Mullin and Pam Birkholz absolutely dominate the upscale furniture consignment market in North Alabama! And this completely lovely dynamic duo behind Interiors By Consign had a lot to share with us about their business and themselves. 

TSG:  How many years have you been in (this) business?

Jennifer:  Our Interiors By Consign Huntsville store is 26 years old, and we have owned it almost 6 years now.

TSG:  What inspired you to start your own business?

Jennifer:  We love good quality furniture and accessories too! We want to help everyone create the home of their dreams and also provide a much needed way for those moving, downsizing or redecorating to repurpose their upscale, brand name furniture locally.

TSG:  How did the two of you meet and eventually decide to go into business together? I have heard you have been friends for a long time?

Jennifer:  Yes. Pam and I have been friends for over 20 years. When I was home raising my kids I started a business doing events and some interior decorating. At that time, Pam worked in admin for a couple of companies in Guntersville. For many years, Pam helped me with weddings and some corporate parties when she could. As our kids grew up and went to college we both ended up working very part time for the previous owner of Interiors By Consign. We had been looking and frankly praying for something to do together when the owner of the store asked me if I was interested in buying it.  It was a total God thing. I had wanted a store for as long as I can remember.  I asked Pam to join me and we are now 6 years into this adventure. Almost 2 years ago we opened a 2nd location in Madison. No plans to stop –  we are full steam ahead.  We feel blessed and incredibly thankful to have the opportunity  to take an already good store and make it something truly unique. We like to say we are gas and brakes. I have endless ideas and ability to jump right in, and Pam has a lot of admin experience and calm to slow the train when needed.  It just works!

TSG:  What is unique about your business?

Jennifer:  We are the only Upscale Furniture Consignment Store in North Alabama. We are very picky about what we consign and sell. We specialize in Upscale, Brand Name, Like New Consignment Furniture, lamps, mirrors and art. We also have locally themed HSV pillows, towels, and candles that we have designed and sourced.

TSG:  When you’re not working, you are both…

Jennifer:  I am trying to hike to all the waterfalls in North Alabama, and Pam is playing with her beautiful Schnauzer – Pfeffer.

TSG:  What is your favorite thing about Huntsville?

Jennifer:  The small town feel in an ever growing environment. We love that there are so many concerts, movies and events where you can still see your neighbors and also meet new people. ..and really where else can you listen to music, and eat German food under a rocket?

TSG:  Give us some words to live by.

Jennifer:  Comparison is the thief of Joy!  We really believe in rowing our own boat and celebrating all the other local business in our area too! To this end we have begun a 1st Friday Business Spotlight where we feature another small business on our Facebook page on the 1st Friday of every month in 2020. Let’s celebrate shopping small and support each other!

TSG:  What’s on your desk right now?

Jennifer:  A blog post I am writing about repurposing furniture in a sustainable way in 2020.

TSG:  What do you never leave home without?

Jennifer:  Phone and Fitbit—I want credit for all the steps I can get!

TSG:  Is there anything else you want us to know/share?

Jennifer:  We work hard to keep our website current and update almost daily. We post pics of all of our furniture in both locations, Huntsville & Madison, on our new arrivals tabs on the homepage.  You can see our current inventory in both stores anytime. We also post on Facebook and Instagram but our website is the only place to see it all!
