Can you tell me a bit more about yourself and how your journey led you to where you are today?

Ashley Schenkein: My first love is travel. I love traveling to the depths of the world really getting to experience another culture, place and way of life. Through travel and living in Jackson Hole, San Francisco, Cuenca and Buenos Aires, I learned to craft jewelry by learning metalsmithing, stone setting, wax casting design techniques. I have been fortunate to continue this travel, getting inspired by the world and designing from my Denver, CO studio.

Can you please tell me a little about your business?

I design two ready-to-wear collections each year that is sold out of my flagship store, online, to retailers nationally as well as designing custom bridal jewelry and heirloom repurposing working with clients one-on-one.

Why did you start your own business?

I had a passion for designing jewelry, which led me to starting a business to share my craft with the world.

What do you love most about owning your own business?

Flexibility hands down. I love my work, and I often put in extra hours when needed, but I also spend a lot of time out of the office adventuring in the mountains in Colorado and traveling the world.

What inspires you?

People and design equally. I love meeting an inspiring person who lights me up, learning their story and what drives them. I also appreciate all different design mediums, which end up inspiring my designs.

What makes you feel accomplished?

When a client truly loves their custom piece of jewelry. It is far less about ego for me than having the deep gratification that a client is in love with their piece of jewelry.

If you could go back in time and give your 18 year old self advice, what would it be?

Don’t worry, listen to yourself and know that it will all work out. I also probably would have gone to art or business school instead of double majoring in sociology and spanish.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

Traveling, being outside, practicing yoga, eating a delicious meal with friends and family, and spending time with my favorite little human, my daughter and my husband.

What trends are you seeing that relate to your business that our readers should be aware of?

Permanent Jewelry has taken full swing! We are now offering permanent jewelry at our flagship store and we’ve also participated in events at people’s homes or elsewhere.

What do you like best about being apart of The Scout Guide?

I love the community of exclusively small businesses.

What’s next for you and your business?

We’re are launching SS23 collection in March, which is going to be full of a lot of colored gemstones, which is unusual for our brand. I’m excited about this launch and that is what is fun about designing new collections – they can be a bit of a departure from our core designs. We’re also designing a lot of new fine jewelry – a lot of which is only available at our shop and at A Line’s four locations.

What are 3 fun facts about you?

I was a Spanish medical interpreter when I first started my jewelry business, and I love outdoor adventuring as much as getting dressed up for a night out on the town.
