Before we dove into cabinet design & trends we got to learn a bit about Dianna’s background and how she got to Cardinal Home Center. Dianna has always been interested in food, organization and people. She attended culinary school at L’Academie de Cuisine in Bethesda, Maryland and owned her own catering business for ten years. It was her husband’s job that initially brought their family to Charlottesville. After having 3 children the hours of the catering business were not ideal and that is how Dianna ended up at Cardinal Home Center. Her role as cabinet designer allows her to leverage her culinary skills, in that she knows how to design a kitchen that will flow and function well, her knack for organization and design, and her people skills as she is interacting with customers, contractors and suppliers all day.

What does the cabinet design process with Cardinal Home Center look like? Dianna is here to help you with any cabinet design needs. Whether it is a new build or a remodel, or even if you are just looking to freshen up your existing cabinetry, Cardinal Home Center can do it all. Typically the first step is for Dianna to schedule a time to meet with you in your home to get a good understanding of your project and your desired style. Dianna will typically spend 60 to 90 minutes with you talking through the vision and taking measurements. She then creates a 3D color rendering and sends it to the client. At that point she invites the client back into the store so that they can look at samples and decide whether a custom or semi-custom line is going to better fit their project goals and budget. 17 years of experience have given Dianna a lot of perspective and she is very open and honest with her clients, making suggestions on how they might improve their layout and design.

Depending on a customer’s budget and the style they are looking for, Dianna will advise them on whether the Decora line or KraftMaid Vantage line is right for them. Decora has 100s of custom design options from various inset and overlay door styles, paint & stain colors, and finishing techniques. KraftMaid Vantage is a semi-custom line that utilizes standard sized boxes and overlay cabinet doors in order to deliver great quality at a more affordable price point.

Typically the process from design to order takes about two to three weeks, depending on the scope of the project. Dianna will connect with your contractor or can recommend a contractor to do the work. Before the order is placed, Dianna will meet with the contractor in the space to measure everything a second time with another set of eyes. Once the order is placed, it takes about four to five weeks for the cabinetry to be delivered. For very custom designs this timeline can be a bit longer. The timeline from delivery to install is typically about 3 weeks. All-in the typical lead timeline that you can expect for cabinetry projects when working with Cardinal Home Center is about 3 months.

2023 Cabinet Design Trends.

According to Dianna there are five key trends that she is seeing in cabinetry design right now.

Traditional Details. “Traditional details in the kitchen are back,” according to Dianna. Exposed finial hinges which provide more of a “furniture look” are making a comeback. Inset cabinet doors are also very popular and people are moving from the more simple shaker cabinet door style that has been very popular to some more traditional designs with more detail.

Dark Stained Wood & Natural Finishes. “We are starting to see see a return to darker stained wood cabinetry in the kitchen,” says Dianna. The warmer wood tones work as a counterbalance to all of the saturated colors in interiors right now and lends a more vintage look to new construction and renovations. People are especially loving the Walnut Warm wood from Decora right now.

“Quarter Sawn Oak is also a big trend,” per Dianna. This means the wood is cut across the grain and you see a lot more ticking in the wood. The warm, rustic look of cabinetry that emphasizes its wood grain creates an inviting atmosphere.

Pocket Doors. “Pocket doors to hide things like coffee stations and washers and dryers are very popular at the moment,” according to Dianna. People are opting to hide things out of plain sight to get a more clean and streamlined look. Pocket doors are nice because they still allow easy access to appliances and other items they are concealing.

Special Hardware. Unique kitchen cabinetry hardware will play a key role in kitchen personalization. Not only can it make your space unique, but it can amplify the design style you’re after. Cardinal Home Center carries high end hardware lines such as Atlas and Jeffrey Alexander. “Sometimes people will even come to us with their hardware pre-selected and then we design around that.”

Two-Toned Cabinets. “Two-toning is still very popular,” says Dianna. This trends has been around for a while and can bring depth, intrigue, and subtle variation into your kitchen. “In 2023 we are seeing a shift to more muted colors and romantic color combinations versus the very stark contrast we had been seeing.”
