Boulder’s longstanding reputation as a destination for foodies needs no introduction, but these female-identifying entrepreneurs do. Supporting woman owned businesses on the Boulder food scene offers some of the most diverse – and delicious – experiences in the county.
The Food Lab
Founder Casey Easton intuitively understands how the kitchen serves as the hub of so many aspects of our lives, from family to friendship circles to time honored traditions. Food Lab is a recreational cooking school with a simple mission: to bring people together over the common language of exceptional food. Food lab’s diverse program welcomes culinary enthusiasts for date nights, corporate and team building events, kids’ classes, summer camps, and food and wine education. A fixture on the busy east end of Pearl Street, Casey’s food lab is beloved in Boulder.

Süti & Co.
Tucked away just steps off Pearl, Süti & Co. quickly and deservedly earned its place as one of Boulder’s pre-eminent bakeries and lifestyle shops. Creator Andrea Uzurowski’s culinary credentials far pre-date Süti, as the founder of Michelin-starred catering service Fresh Food Further. Süti & Co. serves handmade cookies, olive oil cakes, gourmet toasts and small bites in a relaxing and intimate setting. In 2023, Colorado welcomed the Michelin Guide. Stella Spanu’s eponymous Italian fine dining establishment on Walnut earned its place among Boulder’s Michelin-recommended restaurants even before she had celebrated the restaurant’s first anniversary. Stella’s is nothing if not innovative, which is a quintessential characteristic of the Boulder community. We welcome innovators. Michelin aptly describes the “1930’s sexy speakeasy ambience” of the interior. Stella’s fuses art, food, music, and hospitality, with dinner served nightly Wednesday through Sunday, as well as Sunday brunch.

Chef Lisa Balcom opened Farow with the intention of being as close as possible to Boulder County farms. Located in charming Niwot, Colorado, she and husband Chef Patrick Balcom source 100% of their ingredients locally; you will not find cans or boxes in the Farow kitchen. With an ever-changing menu, which serves as a snapshot of what’s available on Boulder farms that day, Lisa is always innovating. A poly-passionate chef, she served as the pastry chef at acclaimed Blackbelly before bringing her vision for Farow to life. The Niwot Tavern
Stacy Szydlek and Tara Shaheen are the proprietors of the always-packed Niwot Tavern. And we mean always. The Tavern serves as a social hub for the quaint nearby village of Niwot, and offers an experience worthy of the Cheers theme song; you really do want to go where everybody knows your name. The sound of laughter is super common in this lively bar and grill. From Taco Tuesdays to Thanksgiving Dinner, Stacy and Tara make their patrons feel like family, quietly taking care of the Longmont homeless community at major holidays, and preferring to serve their community versus stand in the spotlight. Stacy and Tara earned our admiration even before we learned they serve house-made chicken pot pie and local beer!!

For nearly 20 years Kim Naka has set the standard for fresh and authentic Thai cuisine at Boulder’s Aloy Thai. Naka, who relocated from Bangkok to Boulder in 2006 and opened her restaurant that same year, incorporates long-held family recipes on the menu, including the Kao Soi and Spicy Lemongrass Chicken that caught the attention of The Food Network. Kim’s daughters Arisa Chanchokpong and Bo Bean followed their mom’s footsteps, opening Aloy Modern Thai on Larimer in Denver in 2016, and the Aloy Thai fast casual eatery on Capitol Hill in early 2023.
