About The Scout Guide Birmingham Editor Courtney Pigford:
Courtney Pigford grew up in TSG’s hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, where she attended St. Anne’s-Belfield School and spent summers in Atlanta, Georgia. The best of both small, college town life and the big city were inspirations to her growing up.
After graduating from The University of the South (Sewanee) in 1995 with a degree in Art History, Courtney moved to Atlanta to pursue a career in interior design. In 1997, she married her husband, Jay, and moved to Austin, Texas, where he attended graduate school for Architecture. After 7 years in Austin and San Antonio, Courtney and her family, which by then included two toddlers, moved to Birmingham, her husband’s hometown. Since moving to Birmingham, she has worked in interior design, floral and event design, and owned a children’s clothing shop. Courtney has also served on the board of the Birmingham Public Library Foundation, and as a volunteer for Creative Montessori School and The Altamont School.
During trips to Charlottesville to visit her family, Courtney discovered The Scout Guide Charlottesville, and in February 2012, she decided that Birmingham needed something similar. She reached out to TSG co-founders Susie Matheson and Christy Ford, and in September 2012, Courtney published the first volume of The Scout Guide Birmingham. As the Editor of The Scout Guide Birmingham, Courtney loves spending her time advocating for the businesses in Birmingham, raising them up, and generally singing their praises. She strongly believes that locally owned businesses are vital for driving growth as a community.
