“From interior design to fashion, woven materials are having a moment,” says Marie Flanigan of Houston, Texas-based luxury design firm Marie Flanigan Interiors, who is decidedly on board with the trend. “Whether your vibe is boho, traditional, or minimalist, there’s a way to incorporate a little natural texture in your life.” Recently, the award-winning interior designer and classically trained architect had the opportunity to use a variety of chic woven pieces in the outdoor living room at one of her favorite contemporary homes, and shared the sophisticated results on her website. Here, she breaks down her approach to using woven furniture in a cool, contemporary setting.

Leave a lasting impression. When looking for a woven piece of furniture, “Make sure it’s crafted of high-quality materials that can stand up to daily wear and tear,” says Flanigan. She recommends opting for outdoor pieces made of resin wicker that will age gracefully and hold up well against the elements.

Go organic with your accessories. “If you’re just dipping your toe in the woven pond, consider accessorizing with pieces that have a looser, more organic structure,” says Flanigan. “Some of our favorite woven accessories are statement lighting, baskets used as planters, or ottomans, many of which can also be incorporated indoors.”

Check your lines. For a clean, contemporary look, Flanigan suggests using open-weave pieces that feel light and fresh and showcase form. “We recommend opting for furnishings that have a sleek, modern silhouette, letting the details take center stage,” she says.

Work with your architecture. “When choosing the perfect furnishings, we always consider the look and feel of the space,” says Flanigan. For example, in a contemporary environment with a calm color palette and clean lines, Flanigan recommends incorporating pieces that will bring in texture and warmth (which makes woven furnishings a perfect fit).

Complete the look with pieces that celebrate nature. Soft, natural elements will give your contemporary space depth and dimension, while pairing beautifully with your woven pieces. According to Flanigan, accent pillows weaved of organic materials like linen and leather or adorned with organic forms like a palm print are perfect for an outdoor living room.
