By the time September rolls around we’re more than ready to swap out board shorts and flip-flops for more tailored attire. We checked in with four scouted men’s style experts to see what dapper dudes are donning this season. From preppy sweater vests to luxurious loafers, fall style has never looked so good. Go quilted for casual cool. According to David Christopherson, director of retail strategy and operations at Roosevelt & Co., in Huntsville, Alabama, quilted fabrics are an easy way to add interest to a garment while maintaining the flexibility to pair with other patterns. Donning a quilted jacket is an excellent way to weave this stylish cool-weather trend into your wardrobe.

When in doubt, layer. Fall brings warm days and cool nights, which can make dressing tricky.  William Aguirre, owner of Carriages Fine Clothier in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, emphasizes the importance of keeping your clothing versatile with layering. He suggests opting for sweaters and hoodies under vests, sport coats, and light jackets in seasonally luxe materials, like a cashmere vest over a flannel shirt.

Denim today, tomorrow, and always. It’s no surprise this wardrobe staple is once again playing a big role in fall closets. “A classic pair of jeans is always in style,” confirms Ian Dillard, manager of Quattro Tizi in Charlottesville, Virginia. “This year we’re seeing a big focus on sustainable denim.” He’s adding a dark rinse in a classic cut, like this tapered pair by CLOSED, to his closet, which works perfectly for a laid-back gathering or paired with a classic button-up in a fun pattern for an evening on the town.

Channel your inner-East Coast prep. Make like an Ivy League-er and refresh your cable-knit sweaters and penny loafers. “Preppy fashion is making a comeback in a big way! Bold stripes and colors, polos, and collared shirts reign supreme,” says Dillard. Want to try this style, but not sure where to start? A classic oxford shirt in a fun print is always flattering.

Live in a loafer. Want to add instant panache to your closet without getting a whole new wardrobe this fall? Scott Castleberry, manager of William and Harry in Williamsburg, Virginia, recommends a perennial classic like a leather loafer. “Pair this iconic shoe with rolled jeans and stylish socks and you’re bound to get a few compliments,” he says.

The return of the sweater vest. A knitwear option perfect for the season, thanks to its sleeveless construction and ease of layering, is the once under-appreciated sweater vest. Dillard recommends a collegiate looking piece paired with a baggy trouser and t-shirt to keep this style looking hip and effortless.

Nail an autumnal color palette. “This season we’re seeing the colors of autumn—tans and browns mixed with rich yellows, reds, oranges and greens, being used in very smart, sophisticated ways,” notes Christoperson. This earthy colorway lends well to mixing and matching staple pieces, making pulling together an outfit a breeze. A great basic like a long-sleeve polo in maroon is an easy way to work this trend into your looks.

Embrace elevated accessories. Want to go bold? Castleberry suggests adding an ultra-sophisticated handmade Italian silk pocket square as a finishing touch to your sport coat or a silk handmade tie. This is also a great way to work color or pattern into your wardrobe.
