Marble countertops, a perennial favorite in the design world, are taking a walk on the wild side with colors and veining. Laura Pankonien, designer and principal of The Pankonien Group Design & Construction in Austin, Texas, confirms moodier marbles like Arabescatto Corchia, Da Vinci, and Calacatta Vagli are all the rage in kitchen design. In addition to the jaw-dropping look, Kelsey McGregor, founder and principal designer of Kelsey Leigh Design Co. in Edmond, Oklahoma, adds that bold marble options with movement and veining mask the staining and scratching that’s an inevitable part of living with natural stone.

Mitered magic

If you’re looking to achieve the illusion of a thicker countertop, a mitered edge is the way to go. Created by joining two pieces of material at 45-degrees, this 90-degree angle immediately gives the appearance of a substantial piece of stone, this is one of the hottest kitchen countertop trends today. “A mitered edge creates a more exaggerated profile giving the illusion of an extra thick slab, while keeping a clean, finished edge,” Grayson Knight, principal designer at Layered Dimensions Interior Design in Dallas, Texas, says. This is the perfect way to add the drama and interest every kitchen needs.

The look of leather

Previously, our options for stone finishes were honed and polished, but there’s a new kid in town. According to McGregor, homeowners are gravitating toward the subtle luxe look of a leathered finish, that’s velvety and soft and all about texture. Matte in appearance, this rustic yet elevated option enhances the look of natural stone while being more forgiving with imperfections during daily wear and tear.

Pretty porcelain

Porcelain countertops are making waves in kitchen design. Practically immune to damage from heat, staining, chips, and scratches, their low maintenance nature makes them the ideal choice for those that are hard on their surfaces and is proving to be one of this year’s most adoptable kitchen countertop trends. Pankonien suggests porcelain to clients who need that extra durability but don’t want to skimp on aesthetics. “Many of the patterns and colors are images of actual stone, which gives the porcelain a more natural veining pattern and makes it a preferred design choice over man-made quartz or other countertops,“ she explains.

A waterfall wonderland

Whether used as a dramatic design option for your kitchen island or to add some extra panache to your peninsula, the waterfall countertop is more popular than ever. “Easier to maintain in high-use areas, a waterfall countertop is ideal for family friendly kitchens or those that host frequently,” Christina Garcia Lysaught, founder and principal designer of Layered Dimensions Interior Design in Dallas, Texas, says. While material costs may increase with this style, the benefits go far beyond aesthetics.
