Feel Blue: In Praise of Navy

We spend a lot of time extolling the virtues of black, white, and grey, but come November, navy starts to move into position as our most-sought-after neutral. Rich and sophisticated yet not too severe, the hue seems particularly well suited to the time of year when we transition our interiors to a more subdued palette. As the above space by Northern New Jersey’s Michael Aiduss Interior Design (which features a custom floorcloth by Lisa Curry Mair of Canvasworks Floorcloths) shows, navy is elegant and inviting, and able to brighten up an area in a way that can be appreciated well into winter.

Though our fall mindset has us swooning over this navy powder room, also by Michael Aiduss Interior Design, it will undoubtedly remain a favorite of ours year-round. The black sink and sconces, beautiful mirror, and lustrous blue walls are a testament to the potential of the handsome hue.

We love many things about McAlpine, Booth & Ferrier’s Mountain Brook project, including this navy velvet chair, which seems to anchor this lofty space and feels oh so inviting.

From floor to ceiling, this room by Dallas-based Collins Interiors, one of Blue Print Store’s parent design companies, is wonderfully calming with its neutral hues and natural light, and thanks to the navy blue sofas and variety of soft materials, it looks incredibly comfortable as well.

Jackson, Mississippi-based Nancy Price Interiors never fails to wow us. The mix of blue tones and textures in this library, which features navy lacquered wallpaper, is utterly stunning.

Is it just us, or does making an Old Fashioned and spending a fall evening in this space by Atlanta’s Robert Brown Interior Design sound absolutely perfect? The clean lines, leather sofa, and liberal use of navy make it the ideal retreat for the season.

D.C.-based Sally Steponkus Interiors perfectly captioned the Instagram of this space, “Navy never gets old.” We couldn’t agree more—especially when it’s complemented by such a stylish mix of fabrics and furnishings.
Speaking of furnishings, Memphis’s Worlds Away has a variety of navy pieces perfect for adding into the mix this fall. A few of our favorites include (clockwise from top left): “Arthur” navy velvet chair with white piping, “Morgan” navy lacquer lamp with gold leaf blossom detail, “Marcus” navy lacquer cabinet, “Melanie” navy velvet round stool with brass base.
