Tell us the story of L. Collins Interiors. How did it begin? I am an interior designer and the founder of L. Collins Interiors based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where I was born and raised. I went to the University of Oklahoma where I met my husband, Ryan. From there, we both attended law school at the University of Oklahoma College of Law. I practiced law for 6 years before leaving law practice to join my mom and sister in real estate. I loved my new, flexible schedule which allowed me to pursue my creative interests and be with our three children – Emery (10), Gray (7), and Jack (3). Once we outgrew our 1930’s English-style home, I took on my first extensive renovation and construction project, expanding our home to accommodate our growing family – a true passion project! It wasn’t long before my real estate clients were asking for remodeling advice. One small project led to the next, and as the projects got bigger and my client list grew longer, I eventually created my design firm, L. Collins Interiors. I now work full-time in interior design, and feel like I am living my dream! I love to educate myself and can be found poring over design books, taking courses of all kinds, and continuing to evolve and grow as a designer.
What is unique about your business? One thing that is unique about my business is that I tend to not chase trends. My goal is to collaborate with the client to create a space that is meaningful, functional, and ideally timeless. We are constantly being fed design trends on social media and before long, every photo you see looks the same. While I love to incorporate new concepts into my designs, I ultimately believe that my clients are happiest with a space that feels unique to them — collected and curated — and reflects how they live and what they love.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my job is completing a project that we have dreamed about, designed, and poured our hearts and soul into over several months (or even years), and then seeing and knowing my clients love the outcome of a project! Remodeling and decorating often takes a lot of patience, but the result is always worth the wait.
What is the most challenging part of your job? Probably scheduling! Everyone wants immediate results, but the reality is that to create a quality space, there are countless moving parts and multiple professions involved, each with their own schedules, clients, and obstacles. Good things take time, but I often wish we had more of it!
What kinds of services do you offer? l offer a wide-range of design services, from full-scale renovations, new constructions, and decorating.
How would you describe your design style? I would describe my style as coastal-inspired with a fresh spin on traditional design. I truly find my inspiration everywhere! When I look back, I believe I was first inspired by vacationing with my family in Seaside, Florida in the mid-1990’s. Each summer, we would drive from Oklahoma to the panhandle of Florida, which took around 13 hours. There was nothing else surrounding Seaside at that time, and it felt impossible to our weary eyes when the small, picturesque, pastel-colored town emerged from the lush natural landscape and rolling coastal dunes. It was magical! I continue to be inspired by the places we travel, including their natural landscapes and social traditions. When we travel, I am constantly snapping photos of color stories and textures I want to incorporate into my designs.
