SCENES FROM THE SCOUT GUIDE 2022 EDITOR CONFERENCE

The Scout Guide co-founders Susie Matheson and Christy Ford welcome owners at Common House Richmond.

Last week, The Scout Guide editor/owners from across the country convened in Richmond, Virginia for the 2022 TSG Editor Conference. After a three-year hiatus due to COVID, the owners, ranging from 10-year alums to new franchisees preparing to launch their first guides, were thrilled to finally gather in person. The Scout Guide Richmond owner Cheney Edmunds played host, welcoming all to The River City, the perfect locale with a thriving small business scene and good old-fashioned southern charm.

A coffee hour at Common House Richmond, a social club in the center of Richmond’s Arts District, kicked off the action-packed official start of the conference. The Scout Guide co-founders Christy Ford and Susie Matheson began the day by sharing their personal stories that led to the founding of The Scout Guide and how TSG has evolved over the years, followed by a discussion of TSG photography. After lunch at Common House, the owners hopped on buses for a behind-the-scenes tour of Carter Printing, where all volumes of The Scout Guide are printed. After a day of learning, and to offer owners a first-hand experience with one of the thriving TSG Richmond advertisers, Nellie George, a women’s clothing boutique, hosted cocktails and shopping. That evening, Cheney welcomed everyone to The Country Club of Virginia for a dinner where the owners had a chance to mingle and deepen their connections to one another. The attendees were gifted ornaments from The Scout Guide Jackson Hole owner Jill King’s Town Square Ornaments line from her home styling business Styling The New West.

The next morning, at the Quirk Richmond—the art-forward boutique hotel that serves as our owners home away from home—the owners enjoyed an analysis of their Enneagram type, led by Nora Brookfield, and how it related to their businesses. After a quick lunch on the town, and a curated pop-up shop in the Quirk Courtyard of TSG Richmond members, the TSG HQ team led panels on best practices, and shared inspiring tips for ways to run a business, promote local businesses and business owners, and connect with your community.

After the presentations, the owners and co-founders headed to River City Roll where they let loose with a few rounds of bowling and awards were given out to individual owners celebrating their successes from the past year. The next day, it was back to Common House for two final owner-led creative conversations. We ended the three-day event feeling energized and inspired, and having built strong connections that will carry us forward until we convene again in Park City, Utah in 2023!
