When it comes to plastic surgery and making the decision to have a specific procedure that hopefully will impact your life in the most positive of ways, navigating the process of finding the right surgeon and team is imperative to assuring you have the best possible experience. We know how important that process is, and that is why when we scouted out a plastic surgeon whose primary areas of focus range from body, breast, face, men, and non-surgical – we knew who to turn to for full body procedures on the Main Line and Philadelphia would be Dr. Ran Stark, owner of Stark MD Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center located in Bryn Mawr, within Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Ran Stark, M.D. is double board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. He completed over 10 years of training after graduating from medical school, culminating with his one-year Aesthetic Surgery fellowship endorsed by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery with Dr. Louis P. Bucky.

Dr. Stark, a Philadelphia-area native, received his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Delaware, where he graduated summa cum laude. He completed his medical studies at the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel-Aviv University, where he was awarded the Hillel Nathan Award for Academic Excellence in Anatomy, as well as the Sackler Award of Academic Excellence, given only to the valedictorian of each graduating class. Pursuing his passion for surgery, Dr. Stark completed six years of general surgery training at the Morristown Medical Center. He was appointed Administrative Chief Resident during his final year and received the prestigious Hughs D. Dougan, M.D. Award for exemplary devotion to patient care, attention to detail, and excellence in surgical technique. Dr. Stark went on to complete his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern, one of the nation’s top training programs in its field. This also laid the groundwork for his aesthetic surgery fellowship during which he was privileged to be able to participate in over 1,000 cosmetic surgeries. He has co-authored numerous textbook portions and articles and has been chosen to present his work at regional and national conferences.

We delve a little deeper into wanting to learn more about Dr. Stark on a personal level and what makes him one of the premier plastic surgeons in the Philadelphia area. Here is what he had to say…

Congratulation for all of your success that you have achieved within your industry Dr. Stark. What is an accomplishment that really stands out for you that you still feel so proud of?

I think dedication. After so many years of training I have not waivered once from my path. My passion to be a plastic surgeon drove me to pursue the best training I could achieve. Additionally, dedication to my life outside of the work, specifically the family I have created.

What are your biggest priorities when it comes to working with any of your patients, and what would you say is the overriding goal for the type of experience you hope each of your patients have when working with you?

Thank you for asking this question- it’s something that I take very seriously. First and foremost, my patients have to feel comfortable with their experience from start to finish. It is a very raw, invasive and personal experience to fully expose an insecurity. It’s important that the office is welcoming and that I and the entire staff work on putting the patients at ease. It is impossible to have good outcomes if your patients aren’t happy- getting on the same page prior to any procedure is key for successful outcomes. It’s crucial to listen to what they have to say and try to blend (instead of superimpose) my opinion with their goals. Most people do not want to appear as if they have had surgery.

You provide a very wide range of surgical options for any patient to consider in helping them feel better about themselves and gain confidence. Making the decision to move forward with surgery is a big deal for a lot of people. What is some of the advice you try to give your patients prior to surgery and afterwards to help them with the process?

Don’t go through with anything unless you are ready and it is what YOU want. If the patients are ready and our goals are aligned, we explain everything step-by-step, in detail so that they are as prepared as they can possibly be. Myself, my nurses, my staff are all available before and after for any questions. I always tell my patients I am by their side – I will see them any time post-operatively if need be and I call to check on each and every one personally to ensure they are healing well.

What is the greatest joy in your job? Additionally, what are some of the challenges you face in your position and industry as a whole?

My greatest joy is seeing patients happy post-operatively. Restored self-confidence leads to a happier and healthier lifestyle.

Social media has proven both helpful but also challenging in the beauty industry. While it is interesting to see before and after pictures, this has become a mainstay and method of navigating one’s health. Remember that when you are choosing the right surgeon or injector to please look at their credentials, not just their “number of followers.” Many cosmetic doctors are not trained plastic surgeons and may actually not be surgeons at all. In fact, many of the best surgeons do not have wide Instagram followers- they are doing surgery, not posting online!
