Dr. Kiran Gill on Effective Skincare for Aging

The Scout Guide enlisted the help of Dr. Kiran Gill—a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with specialty fellowship training in aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body—to guide us on the journey of preventing and treating aging skin. In 2018, Dr. Gill founded Naples Aesthetic Institute Boutique Surgery and Skin Spa, the only female-owned premier boutique plastic surgery and aesthetic practice in Southwest Florida. Dr. Gill and her team offer surgical and non-surgical options for both men and women including face, breast, and body rejuvenation procedures, as well as a variety of non-invasive skin and spa treatments in a private, tranquil, state-of-the-art environment.

We, similar to our readers, flock to Naples for the 300+ days of sunshine, beach walks, and endless opportunities to catch a tan—but fully recognize the harmful effects it can have on skin. If you’re curious about maintaining a youthful, natural appearance, enjoying the sun safely, or exploring the options of filler and injectables, this guide from Dr. Gill herself is for you.

ADDRESSING SIGNS OF AGING

As a plastic surgeon, my patients come to me for advice, treatments and solutions on improving appearance, specifically to prevent and repair signs of aging. The signs of aging can begin as early as your 20s, although it becomes apparent in your 40s and 50s as a result of changes in skin tissue and underlying components. While we naturally lose fat and bone density in the face as we age, the appearance of aging can be accelerated by sun exposure, stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, and even gravity itself.

If you’re combating typical signs of aging like facial laxity (drooping), dull, dry, and rough skin texture, or age spots/skin discoloration, start integrating these skincare essentials into your routine. First, protect your skin no matter its condition. The basics? Wear a good sunscreen 365 days a year. Anti-pollute your skin with a good cleansing routine. Incorporate an exfoliant several times a week.

TARGETING CONCERNS WITH SKIN CARE

Not sure where to start? Explore our line of results-driven products targeting common skin issues; you can shop them online or come into the office for a skincare consultation. Finally, if you want to take your skin to the next level, my office advises specific active ingredients and treatments to boost collagen levels for plumper skin. Topical vitamin C, retinol, chemical peels, and laser treatments can all help to stimulate collagen in different ways.

INJECTABLES & FILLERS 101

To improve the deepest layer, we’ll evaluate and recommend dermal filler injections or fat transfer to restore the volume lost naturally with age. As an all-female team with a keen understanding and sensibility for our patients, we take an intuitive approach to delivering natural results using a combination of plastic surgery and non-invasive skincare treatments. Our team prioritizes each client’s body proportions, overall facial structure, and personal preferences; no one else’s. Results are natural and focused on achieving your vision for preventing or managing the aging process.

When it comes to injectables and fillers, it is not uncommon for me to see a 20-year-old beginning preventative treatments. However, most women will start with injectable fillers around their mid-30s when facial volume starts to dissipate. It’s important to understand what type of filler will work best for you. Our office offers hyaluronic acid fillers like the Juvéderm and Restylane products, as well as biostimulatory fillers such as Sculptra Aesthetic. Each filler has unique properties and are therefore used in different ways to obtain maximal results. And for those who need reassurance, it’s important to note that all hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid.

In general, results from hyaluronic fillers last 6-12 months, with fillers injected around the mouth and lips lasting approximately six months and areas like the cheeks lasting longer. Biostimulatory fillers such as Sculptra are also long lasting and anti-aging; we usually use all of these fillers in combination to get the best results.

After a long career of working one on one with clients of varying ages, backgrounds and assumptions on anti-aging, the truth is the majority of us aren’t looking for perfection; we’re just looking to feel a little bit better and project more confidence. I welcome you to our Southwest Florida office to take the first step to protecting your youth, enhancing your natural beauty and reaping the benefits of self-care through skin care.
