Fall Getaways with Cloud9 Cabins

Gatlinburg Smokey Mountains at dawn

Each year, East Tennessee draws thousands of visitors in search of The Great Smoky Mountain’s vistas that boast brilliantly-hued forests bursting with fall color. And, year after year, Gatlinburg tops the list of choice destinations from which to enjoy our region’s autumn offerings. Ahead of the fall season (and its onslaught of visitors), we chatted with Volume 7’s Amy and Grant Curran of Cloud9 Cabins, luxury rentals in Gatlinburg.

The husband-wife duo purchased and overhauled their first rental property in 2019. Since 2019, Amy and Grant have expanded their portfolio to fourteen thoughtfully designed and outfitted luxury rentals. Each boasts the characteristic mountain modern aesthetic and exceptional hospitality.

And while Cloud9 Cabins are booked far in advance year-round, the charming getaways hold a special appeal come fall. There is nothing more quintessentially autumn than a curling-up fireside in a cozy cabin, after all. In preparation for such idyllic fall experiences, we chatted with Amy about what to expect from your stay at Cloud9 Cabins (hint, hospitality) and what to pencil in on your Gatlinburg itinerary.

TSG Knoxville: From a design standpoint, Cloud9 Cabins stands out among fellow Gatlinburg short-term rental options. And while each property is unique, there’s a cohesive feel throughout your collection of homes. What inspires the design?
Amy Curran: Thank you! We’ve leaned into a “mountain modern” style throughout our fifteen rental properties, drawing inspiration from our surroundings and more western mountain towns. Wo do achieve this clean look, we’ve leaned into warm whites and earth tones that emphasize our incredible views of the Great Smoky Mountains.

TSG Knoxville: Great design is really just the tip of the iceberg with Cloud9 Cabins stays. Can you tell us about your hospitality strategy at Cloud9 Cabins?
Amy Curran: Our hope is that guests feel like friends and family. This hope informs our hospitality approach, from our first conversation with guests to outfitting the cabins. We’re fortunate that many of our guests choose Cloud9 Cabins for family reunions or other celebrations, which gives us unique opportunity to be a small part of these meaningful experiences, whether that’s through a bottle of champagne for newlyweds or a s’mores setup for little ones on family vacations.

TSG Knoxville: That said, what are your essentials for a great getaway?
Amy Curran: First and foremost, good company in a great property.

TSG Knoxville: Perhaps a better question is, what are the essentials for a great luxury short-term rental?
Amy Curran: A great luxury short-term rental is achieved through the intersection of hospitality and design. Each of our properties has been renovated and re-designed with the sole purpose of being the perfect vacation rental. Think: a game room filled with fun for all ages, from poker to PacMan; a hot tub large enough to accommodate the whole group; and a thoughtful layout and outfitting of guest rooms and shared spaces.

TSG Knoxville: What elements do you think guests appreciate most?
Amy Curran: Anecdotally, guests love that every bedroom at Cloud9 Cabins has an ensuite bathroom, which guests love because it cuts down on bickering over the “best” room. We’ve also been really thoughtful about how to best accommodate larger groups. For example, we’ve included two refrigerators, two dishwashers, and two kitchen sinks to improve flow of cooking.

TSG Knoxville: It seems like no detail is overlooked at Cloud9 Cabins.
Amy Curran: Our priority is creating the ultimate getaway for our guests, from addressing the needs of large groups through design to stocking the fridge with their favorites prior arrival in Gatlinburg.

TSG Knoxville: Let’s talk about Gatlinburg.
Amy Curran: Gatlinburg is such a unique setting that’s really difficult to describe. On one hand, it’s like the Las Vegas strip for families. On the other, Gatlinburg still feels like a quiet mountain getaway. I’m not sure how it can feel like both, but it’s truly a special place with something to do and see for everyone.

TSG Knoxville: And it’s beautiful year-round!
Amy Curran: I think fall, with it’s crisp clean air and incredible foliage, is our favorite time of year. It’s certainly the best time to cozy up in one of our cabins around the fire!

TSG Knoxville: What — aside from the quintessential fall fire — are your favorite autumn activities in Gatlinburg?
Amy Curran: Many of our guests are in search of fall foliage, and we recommend driving through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park or hiking to higher elevation to see the colors from a better vantage point. We also recommend guests experience Dollywood’s Harvest Festival and Gatlinburg Sky Bridge!

TSG Knoxville: What locally-owned businesses should we visit while we’re in town?
Amy Curran: Gatlinburg has so many unique businesses and restaurants. We recommend Howard’s for lunch and The Greenbrier for dinner. For an adult beverage, Sugarland’s Distillery or Ole Smoky Moonshine can’t be missed.

TSG Knoxville: Walk us through the ideal weekend in Gatlinburg…
Amy Curran: A dream weekend in Gatlinburg starts with coffee and breakfast on the porch. Dedicate a day to Dollywood and schedule an in-home massage or spa treatment upon your return. Definitely block off a few hours to hike through The Great Smoky Mountain National Park — Grotto Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Abrams Falls are a few of our favorite hikes! And don’t forget to enjoy the local fare, including The Pancake Pantry for brunch on the morning of your departure!

Each Cloud9 Cabin property reflects the Curran’s sincere dedication to their guests. And it is clear a tremendous amount of time and thought went into each cabin.
