Rossina Boyer’s Artistic Journey from
Peru to Huntsville

Hi, my name is Rossina. I was born and raised in a coastal town in Northern Peru where as a kid, picking fresh mangos and chasing ocean waves were as much as a part of me as my own hands, hips, and feet- you don’t realize how good life is when you’re young!

I immigrated to the US in my teenage years with my family—our story is the typical immigrant American dream! My dad had been here for a few years earning and saving, until the day he could bring his family to join him. After 8 long years of being separated, it was an unbelievable joy when our family was reunited. Through retrospection, I wanted to share my story with other children to remind them their family member(s) out there love them and there is hope they’ll be reunited one day. To that end, I wrote and illustrated a bilingual children’s book based on my own family’s immigration story. I was encouraged by friends and family to publish and distribute the book, and now my family proudly shares our story “Please, I want to see papa again/Por favor, quiero ver a papa otra vez” (You can find it at a library or school near you, or DM me for an inscribed copy!)

I made my home in Houston, TX for about 15 years until moving to Huntsville, AL. I never thought I’d move from Space City to Rocket City, but here we are! It was obviously a transition from a large metropolitan city, but Huntsville and her people have been warm and welcoming. The seamless marriage of nature and the city, the citizens’ pride in the city, and the crescendo of energy in the city all lend themselves to the color palate into which I dip my brushes to make my art. I breathe in the city, mixing the now with the then, and lose myself. My tools work with my hands, my hips, and my feet to create a story, each with its own identity and personality. We at times get lost along the way, but like every good story, we always seem to find our way in the end. Huntsville doesn’t have mango trees and ocean waves, but between the strawberry fields and Big Spring Park, there is more than enough here to call it home.
