Social-Distance Skincare with Trinity Vista Dermatology
It seems the long hours of wearing a mask – in Fort Worth Summer heat, no less – is a recipe for skin flareups, and in doing our part to slow the spread, we’re among the many who have encountered a not-so-pleasant side-effect of mask-wearing: maskne.
With masks as a part of daily life for the foreseeable future, we reached out to our Scouted skincare experts at Trinity Vista Dermatology for the tips + tricks that will bust the oil + acne-causing bacteria that have been stiring up trouble under our masks.
FOUR TIPS + TRICKS
Practice Mask Hygiene
This simple tip goes a long way… For reusable cloth masks, wash + dry every day or find a lineup of clean cloth masks to last you til laundry day. If you’re using a disposable mask, actually dispose of them and switch to a new mask every other day. And, of course do not share a mask with others.
Start Your Day Right
Start your day and end your day with clean skin. If you did not always remove makeup and wash your face morning and night, consider this a necessity at this point.
Level Up
This might be the time to consider medicated over the counter cleansers that contain either glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur. At Trinity Vista Dermatology, we like LaRoche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser (contains glycolic acid and salicylic acid), SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanser (contains glycolic acid), SkinCeuticals LHA Cleanser (contains lipohydroxy acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and glycerin), Panoxyl 4% creamy wash (contains benzoyl peroxide), or SAL3 soap (contains salicylic acid and sulfur). Please note that certain ingredients may be too irritating if you have sensitive skin or expect to be in the sunlight. A light facial moisturizer containing sunscreen in the morning is always recommended.
Go Pro
Consider an appointment with your local board-certified dermatologist if needed. Low dose antibiotics for a short period of time or prescription strength topical treatments may be necessary to get you through your mask-wearing days.
