Fabulous Fall Lips

A change in seasons presents an excellent opportunity to assess our makeup collections and try something new. To help us pull off the perfect fall pout, we asked the experts at Charlotte, North Carolina’s Woo Skincare and Cosmetics to share their favorite shades. From bold reds to go-to neutrals to on-trend hues, here are their recommendations:

Start with a serum. Before you even select a shade, give your lips a little TLC. Woo recommends Intensité Volumizing Lip Serum by RéVive, which plumps the lip area by filling in lines and wrinkles, protects against harmful environmental factors, and leaves lips feeling soft and supple. Woo advises applying a thin layer morning and evening, followed with a lip balm or color.

Get primed. If you’re concerned about lip products feathering or fading, invest in a lip primer. Woo suggest Trish McEvoy’s Flawless Lips for making sure color, liner, or gloss stay put.

Pick up a pencil. Though not a must unless you’re wearing red lipstick, lip pencils are useful for lining and defining. To prevent your red from feathering, opt for Laura Mercier’s True Red, a classic and natural choice. When wearing other colors, Woo recommends Laura Mercier’s Plumberry, a medium rose brown that works for almost everyone.

Make a statement. For bold color, Woo recommends Bobbi Brown’s Red Velvet from the new Luxe Lip Colors line, a deep, rich red that most people can wear.

Stay neutral. When going for a more understated look, Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color Bahama Brown is a pinky brown ideal for pulling off a smoky eye/nude lip combination (and a Woo cult favorite). Another top pick is Linda Rodin’s So Mod, a nude yet rosy pink that nods to the 1960s. To bring out a subtle tint, Woo recommends Smith & Cult’s The Tainted lip stain, a rich balm that’s available in Sweet Suite, which is perfect for warm-toned or sun-kissed complexions, and Linger Sigh, a pale pink that’s great for those with porcelain to fair skin.

Try a trend. Woo predicts deep purple is going to be big this fall. To pull it off, try Bobbi Brown’s Plum Brandy, another product from the Luxe Lip Color collection. Another pick in the purple family is Linda Rodin’s Billie in the Bike, a violet shade that’s perfect for anyone who tends to go for a little glamour; Woo recommends applying a sheer layer for an all-day stain, and putting on multiple layers for more of a statement.

Play it safe. For those who are new to lipsticks or nervous about trying something new, Woo recommends experimenting with NARS’s Velvet Gloss Pencils, which have a smooth, buttery texture and come in shades ranging from nude to bright red.

Apply a nighttime product. To heal and enhance the health of your lips overnight, Woo suggests Chantecaille Lip Potion. The whipped formula includes macadamia oil, shea butter, vitamin E, and rose and lavender essential oils that nourish, enhance smoothness, and leave lips exceptionally soft. And while it’s a nighttime product, Woo says the Potion can be used all day to prep lips for color.
