What are the benefits of using sunscreen daily? What should you look for when choosing a sunscreen?
J: “There are so many benefits of using sunscreen! Not only does it help reduce signs of aging (it’s your BEST anti-aging product), it also protects our skin from risk of skin cancer—for best coverage, make sure you’re reapplying your sunscreen every 2 hours throughout the day! Looking for the best one? In my opinion, the best sunscreen is going to be the one you’re going to wear daily. You’ll see the words “chemical” or “physical/mineral” sunscreens, and there are pros/cons for certain skin types, but go with the one that feels the best so you’re inclined to wear it more!”
What are three go-to skincare products for healthy summer skin?
J: “Sunscreen (hands downs), including powder sunscreen for reapplication throughout the day (Colorescience’s brush-on SPF is the only brush on powder SPF approved by the Skin Cancer Foundation!)”
J: “Lip SPF: now that we’re heading outdoors more during the summertime, don’t forget to protect your lips! Ensure that your lip moisturizer has SPF and is water/sweat resistant (my go to is Colorescience lip shine SPF 35!)”
J: “Antioxidants, like vitamin C, are crucial to wear under your sunscreen. They neutralize free radicals, making your SPF more effective and absorbing harmful UV energy before it damages your DNA and collagen (Vivant’s Pure C+E is my go to!)”
How should your skincare routine differ during the summer months?
J: “Your skincare routine should be consistent throughout the year, but a lot of my clients will introduce a hyperpigmentation product to try and keep ahead of melasma/sun spots that can form from excessive heat/sun! As long as you’re proactive on sunscreen application, a normal skincare routine is encouraged month to month!”
What are the best ways to prepare your skin for a day in the sun?
J: “Plan ahead: make sure you’re leaving the house with enough sunscreen for reapplication on the body and face every 2 hours, and bring body coverage; a hat and long sleeves will help protect your skin as well!”
What are the best ways to rejuvenate your skin after a day in the sun?
J: “Hydration is key when spending a lot of time outdoors—dry skin is aging skin, so we want to make sure to introduce moisture back! You can use a hydrating sheet mask or a hyaluronic acid serum to help rejuvenate (my favorite is Face Reality’s hydrabalance serum!)”
Any tips for how to prevent breakouts and clogged pores due to the extra humidity and sweat that can occur during the summer months?
J: “Acne forms because there is an excess amount of dead skin inside our pores that tend to mix with sebum/sweat/bacteria. Ensuring that you have an exfoliation factor in your routine is key. There are two different types of exfoliation: physical and chemical. Physical exfoliation are scrubs, luffas, etc. Chemical exfoliation are ingredients like salicylic acid, mandelic acid, glycolic acid, etc. I tend to favor the chemical exfoliation, because scrubs can be very harsh on our skin! You can implement this into your routine 2-3x/week to ensure you’re preventing and treating (Vivant’s 8% mandelic 3-in-1 serum is a game changer!)”
How does chlorine affect your skin? Any advice for preparing your skin for a pool day?
J: “The disinfects and iodides in chlorine can be very harsh on our skin. I always advise my clients to put a thin layer of regular aquaphor or vaseline on their face or areas on their body prone to acne (after their sunscreen) prior to swimming to help occlude and block the chlorine chemicals from penetrating! Aquaphor/vaseline does not clog your pores, and is great at helping in this scenario!”
What benefits does the extra sunlight have on your skin? What are the downsides?
J: “There are a lot of TikTok videos trending stating sunscreen does not allow for ample Vitamin D absorption— this couldn’t be father from the truth! You’ll still get the amount of Vitamin D you need, through normal sun exposure, diet, and supplementation. As long as you’re maintaining smart sun practices, and reapplying your sunscreen every 2 hours, enjoy your time outdoors! The risks of not wearing sunscreen FAR outweigh any benefits!”
Any tips for keeping your skin healthy and hydrated over the summer?
J: “Drink plenty of water— take a reusable water bottle (the cult favorites Stanley or Brumate are great!) to keep your body hydrated, and make sure to add a hydrating product into your routine (hyaluronic acid serum or a hydrating sheet mask!)”
Are there any skincare trends you should avoid?
J: “The best rule of thumb is to always reach out to your skincare professional prior to trying any trends you see! Everyone’s skin type is different, so what might work for one person, might not work for the next! Our skin is the largest organ of our body, so we want to make sure to keep it thriving!”
