Guide to Youth Climbing in Boulder

Families everywhere share the challenge of raising active children.  Kids are kids, even in a town as active as Boulder.   Our backyard playground invites kids to try a broad variety of outdoor and action sports, not the least of which is rock climbing. .  Local business ownership is a hallmark of the Boulder climbing scene.  Some of world’s most notable climbers began their careers at local gyms, making Boulder an unbelievably inspiring place for young adventurers to learn to climb.

Boulder Rock Club – The “BRC” has been locally owned for over 30 years, in many ways anchoring the climbing community.  Beginning with toddlers and non-competitive after school climbing, and advancing to varsity level competitive team climbing, the Boulder Rock Club provides a highly supportive environment for climbers of all experience levels.

 ABC Kids Climbing – ABC dedicates their gym, world-class coaches, and year-round programming exclusively to youth climbing.  ABC’s Elite competitive team is home to many USA Climbing champion climbers.  The gym is founded and run by the parents of Brook Rabatou, the United States’ first Olympic climber, who competed in sport climbing in Tokyo in 2020.

 The Spot – The Spot was the first dedicated bouldering gym in the United States and remains an epicenter of the Boulder community.   From private coaching to summer camps to year-long team programs, kids love The Spot.   An annual calendar highlight is the “Psychadelia” black light climbing competition that’s held every year in October, with categories for all competitive levels.  

 MovementThe Boulder flagship gym boasts over 22,000 square feet and 30 – 40 feet walls.   Yoga and fitness programs round out the climbing experience, and comprehensive youth programming is offered year-round.  The “Beginner Rock Climber Package” is ideal for anyone looking to learn to climb.

 Avid 4 Adventure Founded in Boulder, Avid 4 Adventure offers many different adventure-oriented camps in several states.  There are always rock climbing offerings on the camp schedule, providing a flexible and simple way to introduce kids to the sport on either a mobile climbing wall or in natural climbing environments.

Neptune Mountaineering   This South Boulder institution is the first stop for gear, inspiration, and knowledge.  See the Neptune website for beta on local climbing areas and closures, but definitely visit this iconic store in person. Part retail and part mountaineering museum, if you don’t catch climbing fever at Neptune, you might have a strange case of adventure immunity.
