7 Things Our Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill Editor Is Loving Right Now

As advocates for small businesses, The Scout Guide editors are continually scouting their communities for local finds to share and celebrate. With their fingers on the pulse, they are also excellent sources of unique recommendations. Recently, we caught up with The Scout Guide Raleigh, Durham & Chapel Hill editor Hopie Avery to find out what she’s really excited about these days. Here, she shares her current obsessions, from the movies providing her with much-needed eye candy to a meditative pastime to her go-to wardrobe staples.

1.WHAT I’M LISTENING TO

Jazz and World Music on WNCU Radio //This local station is so good. They play jazz all week long, and the weekend shows are the absolute best. Friday night starts with with funk, blues, reggae, and music from Senegal. You can stream it on TuneIn, or your music app of choice.”

2. WHAT I’M DECORATING WITH

St. Tropez Soleil Coffee Table Book from La Maison //I have a kitchen renovation on the horizon, so in the meantime, all other decorating projects are on hold. The eye candy coffee table books from La Maison add an awesome punch to my living room, and are of course so dreamy to browse through.”

3. WHAT I’M WATCHING

House of Gucci, Royal Tenenbaums, and My Name is Pauli Murray // “My kids make fun of me, but loved the movie House of Gucci, it was such eye candy for me and I love Lady Gaga! We also watched Royal Tenenbaums recently and now I am really wanting to paint my walls that bubble gum pink color…whatcha think? Lastly,  I am very long overdue to watch the Pauli Murray documentary, My Name is Pauli Murray. I read Pauli’s autobiography last year, Proud Shoes, it was eye-opening and informative about lots of different areas in Durham and Orange counties, and Pauli grew up right here in Durham, very close by.”

4. WHAT I’M ENJOYING

Matouk Linens at Quintessentials // “Over the holidays I treated myself to new Matouk linens from Quintessentials and they are the ultimate cozy. Made of 500 thread count Egyptian cotton percale with elegant satin stitch detailing, they are such a welcome luxury at the end of the day.”

5. WHAT I’M WEARING

Cashmere V-Neck Sweater from Lark //I’m all about comfort clothes right now and I am loving cashmere sweaters, some old, some new, from Lark, Vermillion, and Bano. Last year I made a stance to go with investment pieces and walk away from ‘cheap & cheerful’ (my motto when I designed flip flops at Old Navy!) and it’s paying off.”

6. WHERE I’M GOING

The Spa at The Umstead // “Nowhere, yet. We’ve postponed our trip to the lovely Lodge at Glendorn in Pennsylvania. Fortunately, we’re lucky to have The Umstead so nearby and a visit to their spa is always a treat.”

7. WHAT I’M DOING

Swimming Outdoors //Even during the winter, I’m continuing to swim outdoors. The air is cold, but the water is warm, and when it’s extra brisk it encourages me to pick up the pace. I find the practice meditative and it clears my mind and gets me ready for the day. I also love the light refraction and rainbow sparkles you see on the bottom of the pool.”
