As advocates for small businesses, The Scout Guide editors are continually scouting their communities for local finds to share and celebrate. With their fingers on the pulse, they are also excellent sources of unique information. Recently, we caught up with The Scout Guide Little Rock editor Valerie Shively to find out what she’s really excited about these days. Here, she shares her current obsessions, from small batch simple syrups perfect for drizzling into drinks to the local art she’s coveting.

1. WHAT I’M WEARING

Vanessa Lianne Moonstone Drops // “A friend introduced me to this Brooklyn based designer, Vanessa Lianne, who hand-makes her jewelry and now I never take these earrings off.”

2. What I’m Doing

Gardening // “I find myself enjoying gardening the older I get. It’s a fun activity to do with my son who loves getting dirty, and a great opportunity for him to learn responsibility and patience. We added strawberries and peppers to our little herb garden a few summers back, and last year we expanded to okra and tomatoes and had enough to share with the neighbors.”

3. What I’m Gifting

Pink House Alchemy Simple Syrups // “We’re big fans of these small batch simple syrups made by Pink House Alchemy in Fayetteville, Arkansas, found locally at Eggshells Kitchen Co. Every time I gift one, I buy one to try at home. A few of our favorites are Ginger, Herbalicious, and Mexican Chile. In addition to cocktails and mocktails, I’m always drizzling a little on salads and fresh fruit.”

4. What I’m Decorating With

Recycled Glass African Trade Beads // “I got a green set of these gorgeous beads from Tanarah Luxe Floral and now I think I need the cobalt blue ones. I love the addition of a stack on coffee table books or a console table.”

5. WHAT I’M COVETING

Delta Parke #31 by Bryan Frazier available for purchase online from M2Gallery.

Bryan Frazier Art // Currently on my wish list is a piece from a local artist, Bryan Frazier, who is displayed at M2Gallery in SOMA, one of my favorite neighborhoods in Little Rock. He does abstract aerial views inspired by the farmlands along the Mississippi Delta. I grew up on a working farm so I would really love to have a piece that represented my family history and goes with my interiors.”

6. What I’m Reading

American Girl Books // “My seven year old is now interested in my American Girl book sets from my childhood. I look forward to taking turns reading with her every night and revisiting the stories I loved at her age.”

7. What I’m Using

Luxe Serum from Miller March Cosmetics // “I cannot say enough good things about this serum created by two of my local friends at Miller Marsh Cosmetics. One who is a pharmacist and the other is a registered nurse injector, so they know their stuff. They came together and built a line of skincare products that do such a great job brightening and hydrating, plus I love knowing I can trust the people who created what I’m putting on my skin.”
